Former National Councillor Werner Carobbio dies

Former Ticino National Councillor Werner Carobbio of the SP died on Tuesday morning at the age of 86. This was announced by his cantonal party. Carobbio was considered a cornerstone of socialism in Ticino. The trained teacher was a member of the National Council from 1975 to 1999.

Carobbio was born in Lumino in 1936 and began his political career at a young age, according to the party. He joined the Socialist Youth. From 1964 to 1972, he was vice-municipal president in Lumino and later sat on the municipal council there.

In 1969, Carobbio co-founded the Autonomous Socialist Party in Ticino and became its secretary. He was first elected to the National Council in 1975 and was a member of the SP parliamentary group. In addition to various committees of the National Council, he chaired the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK) into the secret resistance organization P-26 in 1990.

After resigning from the Grand Chamber, he was elected to the Ticino Grand Council and became its President in 2005. In addition to his parliamentary activities, Carobbio was also committed to social issues.

In the 1970s, he headed the Ticino teachers' union. In 1991, he became President of the Swiss Tenants' Association. Carobbio is survived by his wife, two daughters and grandchildren.

His daughter Marina Carobbio has been a member of the cantonal government of Ticino since April. She heads the Department of Education. In 2019, she was elected to the Council of States for the SP in place of longstanding CVP National Councillor Filippo Lombardi. She was a member of the National Council from 2007 to 2019.
