On Thursday, a French delegation presented French President Emmanuel Macron's program for the expansion of nuclear energy in Bern. It was invited by the Swiss Nuclear Forum.

The French ambassador in Bern, Marion Paradas, emphasized at the conference that Switzerland imports a considerable amount of nuclear power that is produced in France.

In February 2022, the French President announced the construction of six new nuclear power plants by 2050. In addition to these six planned power plants, the construction of eight more is being considered.

Laurent Kueny from the French Ministry for Energy Transition and Marie-Agnès Berche from the French electricity company EDF described the outline of this expansion project in Bern.

The event took place one day after the Council of States adopted a postulate to reopen the debate on new nuclear power plants in Switzerland. The federal government's Energy Strategy 2050 provides for a gradual phase-out of this type of electricity.
