The Rector of the University of Freiburg, Astrid Epiney, has been awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class by the Federal Republic of Germany. Germany thus honored Epiney's commitment as Professor of European Law.
Epiney was instrumental in establishing the Bachelor's and Master's degrees with a focus on European law at her university. She has rendered outstanding services to the development of international exchange programs between the University of Fribourg, and in particular its Faculty of Law, and German universities, according to a statement from the German Embassy in Bern.
Epiney has also continuously promoted the university's bilingual courses for many years. This has enabled her to further raise the profile of the university's bilingualism and contribute to understanding between the German and French cultural areas.
As co-author of a well-known textbook on European law and member of the German government's Scientific Advisory Council on Global Environmental Change (2004-2008), she actively contributes to scientific expertise.
In recent years, Epiney has increasingly focused on Switzerland's relations with the EU, particularly with Germany. Born in Germany, she has been Rector of the University of Fribourg since 2015.
