The pollution in several watercourses of the Fribourg Broye has been contained. The floating barriers remain in place for the time being. The drinking water network is currently not affected, the Fribourg police announced on Saturday evening in response to an inquiry.
The pollution was limited to the affected watercourses, the Biberen Canal, the Grand Canal and the Broye Canal, the police said in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Thousands of liters of heating oil spilled into the Biberen Canal on Friday because someone had been careless when transferring the fuel on the premises of a company in Ried near Kerzers FR.
Specialists from the lake police were deployed to close the Broye Canal from the entrance to Lake Neuchâtel to the entrance to Lake Murten. A navigation ban was signaled until further notice. There is no danger to the population.
The ecosystem has been severely affected. However, no dead fish have yet been sighted, it was reported. According to initial findings, the drinking water network does not appear to have been affected.
The canal will remain closed until Monday. The fire department will continue to clean the banks of the Broye Canal on Sunday. The contaminated soil was removed by a specialist company. The drains were also cleaned.
