The Christian Democratic German sister parties CDU and CSU have started the hot phase of the European election campaign with a challenge to the ruling "traffic light" coalition.
"A traffic light in Europe is enough," said CDU Secretary-General Carsten Linnemann at the CDU party conference in Berlin on Wednesday. Linnemann's CSU colleague Martin Huber added that a "stop sign for the traffic light in Berlin and in Brussels" was necessary at the European elections on June 9. He added: "The traffic light is finished, and that must also become clear on July 9."
Afterwards, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was scheduled to address the 1001 delegates. The CDU politician is the lead candidate of the conservative European political party family, the EPP.
According to the opinion polls, the CDU/CSU has a good chance of becoming the strongest force in Germany in this election. It is stable at around 30%, which is almost twice as much as is predicted for the SPD, Greens and AfD.
The term "traffic light" is derived from the colors of the three governing parties, red (SPD), yellow (FDP) and green. Among the Christian Democrats in Germany, there is the special case of the CSU, which only runs in one federal state - Bavaria.
