Employees of the main customs office in Lörrach have stopped a Swiss delivery van with 243 boxes of so-called Dubai chocolate at a checkpoint near the border. The driver had to pay import duties of 920 euros, as reported by customs on Thursday.

During the check, the driver told the customs officers that he was on his way to Dortmund to deliver the loaded goods there. The documents for the van's load showed that it was chocolate from Switzerland that had been imported to Germany shortly before.

Customs officials counted 243 boxes containing around 45 kilograms of so-called Dubai chocolate and initiated criminal proceedings on suspicion of tax evasion, according to the statement. After paying the tax of 920 euros, the man was able to continue his journey with the "highly coveted goods", as the customs authorities wrote about the incident on November 4.

The chocolate, which is causing a stir on social media in particular, is filled with pistachio cream and kadayif, crispy pastry threads that are often used in oriental desserts.
