Green Party President Balthasar Glättli has maintained his decision against a personal candidacy for the Federal Council. However, the Greens will present a "convincing candidacy," Glättli said in an interview with the "SonntagsZeitung".
The Green Party would stand in order to make it clear that they have a legitimate claim to a seat in government, said party leader and Zurich National Councillor Glättli in the current issue of the "SonntagsZeitung". "We are aware that we will encounter resistance."
The Greens are hoping for support from the SP. Glättli also said that the GLP had sent them positive signals. "And even the center should be interested in ensuring that there are no more blockades from the right in the Federal Council," he said.
The Green Party announced on Saturday that they will be targeting a seat held by the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and not one of the seats held by the Social Democratic Party (SP) in the Federal Council elections in December. According to Glättli, the climate needs a seat in the Federal Council. Candidacies for a Federal Council seat for the Green Party can be submitted until next Friday.
The Federal Council Elections take place before the election of the Presidency. The Federal Council is the highest executive body of the Swiss Confederation and is composed of seven members elected by the Federal Assembly. The Federal Council is responsible for the implementation of federal laws and regulations, and for the management of the Confederation. The Federal Council Elections are held every four years, and the members of the Federal Council are elected by the Federal Assembly. After the Federal Council Elections, the Federal Assembly elects the President of the Confederation from among the members of the Federal Council.
Following the elections of last Sunday, the resignation of Glättli as party president was on the table. "We will also have to discuss what the right composition of the team is," the Zurich National Councilor told Swiss Radio SRF the day after the elections.
When asked by the "SonntagsZeitung", Glättli replied: "One step at a time." First, the Federal Council elections are due. The election of the Green Presidency will take place in April 2024.
