The Swiss Greens and the GLP have reacted with indignation to the Federal Council's decision to build nuclear power plants. They accuse the national government of disregarding the will of the people.

A forward-looking energy policy is based on renewable energies and energy efficiency, Bernese Green National Councillor Aline Trede is quoted as saying in a party press release.

The Federal Council's decision to allow the construction of new nuclear power plants (NPPs) is completely out of date and economic nonsense. Nobody wants more new nuclear power plants, not even the Swiss electricity companies. The idea of subsidizing the construction of nuclear power plants is therefore expensive and an ideological ploy.

The GLP has a similar message: "The Green Liberals are fighting this with all legal means at their disposal and are calling on the Federal Council not to abandon the path laid down by the people," said Martin Bäumle, a member of the GLP National Council in Zurich, in a statement.

In May 2017, 58% of the population voted in favor of a gradual nuclear phase-out. And it was only in June of this year that they clearly voted in favor of relying entirely on renewable energy with a 69% yes vote, according to the GLP.
