The Greens want to cover all of Switzerland's current electricity needs with solar energy. Roofs, facades and infrastructure should provide the space for the systems. With this goal in mind, they are starting to collect signatures for their solar initiative.

Following the vote on the Electricity Act on Sunday, the initiative is intended to enable the next step for climate protection and the energy transition, as the party announced at the start of the collection on Tuesday. Switzerland is currently only using a tenth of the solar energy potential in buildings and infrastructure.

The solar initiative demands that a solar installation be included in all new buildings and renovations. According to the initiators, this will create security of supply and jobs. Once installed, solar systems provide cheap and clean electricity for decades.

The Federal Chancellery announced on Tuesday that the initiative "for a secure supply of renewable energies (solar initiative)" meets the legal requirements. The collection period runs until December 11, 2025.
