At least 110 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the north of the Gaza Strip on Monday, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority.

The people died when several residential buildings in the Jabalia district were hit, said a spokesman for the authorities. Dozens more victims are believed to be under the rubble. The information could not initially be independently verified.

When asked, the Israeli army emphasized that it checks targets very carefully before an attack in order to avoid civilian casualties as far as possible and warns people of an imminent attack. Hamas deliberately mingles with the civilian population.

Jabalia has been the scene of fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas for days. The district is considered a stronghold of the Islamist terrorist organization that attacked Israel on 7 October and caused massacres among the civilian population. Israel suffered around 1200 casualties. According to Palestinian figures, almost 19,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israeli airstrikes and the ongoing ground offensive.

Shortly after the Hamas attack and since then, Israel has repeatedly called on civilians to move to the south of the Gaza Strip because of the upcoming fighting in the north. However, the humanitarian situation there is appalling and there is now also fighting in the south.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Kamal Adwan Hospital in Jabalia was also largely destroyed in the fighting. At least eight patients had died, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on Sunday evening on the X platform, formerly Twitter. The patients, including a nine-year-old child, had died due to inadequate medical care.

The Permanent Mission of Israel to the United Nations in Geneva accused Tedros on X of not mentioning that the Islamist Hamas had taken up residence in the Kamal Adwan Hospital. Before the Israeli army entered the premises, a dialog was held in coordination with the medical teams. The army had allowed a humanitarian time window and most of the hospital had been evacuated.

According to the military, several dozen civilians had refused to leave the area despite previous requests and warnings. In the area, 90 terrorists were arrested. "Israel also destroyed the terrorists' infrastructure and found numerous weapons and intelligence documents hidden in the incubators in the infant ward, among other places," according to the Permanent Mission of Israel to the UN.
