Hans Martin Meuli of the FDP was surprisingly elected as the new mayor of Chur on Sunday. His challenger Patrik Degiacomi (SP) was only 18 votes behind him. Due to the close result, an official recount will take place.

Social Democrat Degiacomi (SP) was long considered the favorite for the office of mayor. Even after the first round of voting on June 9, the SP candidate was almost a thousand votes ahead of Meuli with 3,356 votes.

Degiacomi managed 4,309 votes in the second ballot. Meuli, on the other hand, achieved 4,327 votes. As the difference is less than 0.3 percent, the city will have to conduct an official recount on Monday.

Meuli, who has been a municipal councillor in Chur for many years, has already served as the FDP's parliamentary group leader for several years. On June 9, he was elected to the three-member city council and thus achieved the goal of the Chur FDP to secure the seat on the committee after Marti's departure. He is now also taking up Marti's position as mayor.
