A conciliatory end to a difficult week for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: on his 66th birthday, the heads of state and government of the G7 group and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen celebrated him at the summit in southern Italy.

Before the working session on migration, they sang "Happy Birthday", led by US President Joe Biden, according to the German delegation.

On Friday night, Scholz, who is accompanied in Italy by his wife Britta Ernst (63), had already celebrated his birthday with his team and received a cake at midnight.

The week had not started particularly well for Scholz with the aftermath of the European elections. With 13.9 percent, his Social Democrats had achieved their worst result since they began contesting national elections in Germany as the SPD. After the G7 conference, the Chancellor will travel on to the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland on Saturday.

He will then have to return to Berlin to prepare the federal budget. The draft is due to go through the cabinet on July 3, but the question is whether it will succeed.
