On Sunday, homeowners expressed their disappointment at the voters' rejection of an easier termination of tenancy for personal use. On the part of tenants, there was satisfaction that tenant protection was supported by the electorate.
Councillor of States Brigitte Häberli-Koller (center/TG) said on behalf of the Homeowners' Association (HEV) that the proponents had underestimated the need for explanation. They had not emphasized enough that the legal remedies for tenants would be retained. In addition, the continued strict regulations for terminating a tenancy for personal use should have been made clearer, she told Swiss television SRF.
The aim was to strengthen property ownership with a view to building more housing, said Philipp Matthias Bregy, a member of the National Council from the canton of Valais. The aim was to create justice and protect property, HEV board member Bregy told SRF. Ultimately, this would also have been a means of combating the housing shortage.
National Councillor Michael Töngi (Greens/LU) and Vice President of the Tenants' Association was pleased that tenant protection was not being dismantled in favor of personal use. The bill had met with great approval in parliament. The people have now rejected it.
