Human Rights Council: Switzerland introduces resolution on demonstrations

At the four-week session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland introduced a resolution on the promotion and protection of human rights during peaceful demonstrations. In doing so, Switzerland and Costa Rica continued their more than ten-year commitment in this area.
This year's resolution focuses on the instruments of law enforcement forces at peaceful demonstrations, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday at the end of the 56th session of the Council.
According to the FDFA, the aim is to support authorities in better fulfilling their obligations, for example in the conduct and facilitation of demonstrations. The Council adopted the resolution by consensus, which the FDFA sees as a success for Switzerland.
In its statement to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, Switzerland addressed the draft law in The Gambia to lift the ban on female genital mutilation, respect for freedom of expression and association in Georgia, minority rights in China and the call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid for Gaza.
