ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric has reminded states how important it is for them to implement international humanitarian law. They have committed themselves to this, she called out to them in Geneva on Monday. And: "This is not the time to lower our standards."
"Millions of people suffering in over 120 conflicts around the world have an expectation of international humanitarian law," said the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the start of the International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
"If this right is not applied now, at a time of urgent need, then when?" asked Spoljaric to the thousands of delegates gathered in the city for four days.
And she reiterated that the ICRC is neutral and does not take a position for one side or the other. This without mentioning specific conflicts and their conflict parties by name.
"We work on behalf of the victims of war," continued the ICRC President. She hoped that the conference, which takes place every four years, would be able to advance international humanitarian law in a non-politicized way.
