Indian family acquitted of human trafficking charges

The four members of a wealthy Indian family are not guilty of human trafficking. The Geneva Criminal Court acquitted them of this charge on Friday. However, they are guilty of commercial usury.
The defendants were accused of exploiting domestic staff in their villa in Cologny GE. The court found that the Indian domestic workers were not forced to come to Switzerland to work.
However, even taking into account the fact that they received board and lodging, they were paid paltry wages. According to the judges, the family characteristically exploited the weak position of these Indian employees, some of whom were illiterate.
The parents were sentenced to four and a half years in prison. Their daughter-in-law and son received four years in prison. The defendants were not present at the sentencing.
