The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security has recorded a year-on-year decline in irregular migration to Switzerland in the first half of 2024. According to the Federal Office's figures, around 12,500 so-called illegal residents were apprehended online by the end of June. At the same time last year, around 17,800 were apprehended.

The "NZZ am Sonntag" first reported on this. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) also recorded a slight decrease in numbers in June 2024 compared to the same month last year. According to the BAZG, irregular border crossings mainly took place via the southern border in Ticino. Compared to the previous month of May, the number of crossings increased slightly.

In each of the two previous years, the FOCA recorded over 50,000 irregular border crossings into Switzerland - primarily via the southern and eastern borders. This was more than double the number recorded in 2021, a year dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic, when around 18,900 irregular crossings were recorded.
