The delegates of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities have completed a change at the top of their organization. Former Vice President Ralph Friedländer replaces Ralph Lewin as President. Lewin takes over the Vice-Presidency.
The 94 delegates elected Friedländer unopposed by acclamation, as announced by the Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) on Sunday after the delegates' meeting. The new president is a member of the Jewish Community of Bern (JGB). He has been Vice President of the SIG since 2020 and was previously President of the JGB.
Ralph Friedländer was born in Maputo (Mozambique) in 1959 and grew up in Geneva and Lugano. A psychologist by training, he can look back on a career of over 30 years with the Swiss Confederation. Among other things, he worked at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Until the end of May, he headed the office of the Extra-Parliamentary Commission for International Cooperation. Following his retirement, he now has the necessary resources for the presidency, wrote the SIG.
Lewin had retired from the presidency after four years and made himself available for the vice presidency. The 71-year-old was a member of the cantonal government in Basel for the SP.
In an interview with the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung", he admitted that the amount of work as SIG President had surprised him, especially after the terrorist attack on Israel by the Islamist Palestinian Hamas on October 7. In the 2020 SIG presidential election, he won a competitive election against Friedländer.
