Federal Councillor Beat Jans has responded to accusations by a National Council committee that he does not provide enough information on asylum dossiers and is too often absent from committee meetings. He wants to set different priorities and meet the information requirements, he said on Wednesday in Bern at a media conference.
According to a report in the Sonntagszeitung newspaper, members of the National Council from all parties criticized Jans in a letter for poor communication on asylum issues. According to the report, he withholds important information and is too often absent from meetings of the National Policy Committee.
A spokeswoman for Jans confirmed receipt of the letter to the newspaper and said that Jans takes part in committee meetings when Federal Council business or business with major political implications is on the agenda.
In response to a question from a journalist at the media conference for Wednesday's Federal Council meeting, Jans himself said that he was pleased that the members of the committee were receiving more information and wanted to see him in person more often. The letter had expressed this clear wish of the State Policy Committee (SPK).
Jans responded to the accusation that he had missed too many meetings with scheduling conflicts. He said he now wanted to set different priorities and was happy to do so. He rejected the accusation that he had deliberately not passed on information. He did not want to do that. He was thinking about how he could approach the Commission more proactively.
