Ukrainian authorities are investigating a new case in which Russian troops are alleged to have shot prisoners of war.

According to previous investigations, five Ukrainian soldiers were captured during fighting around the village of Petrivka in the Pokrovsk district. They were disarmed and forced to lie on the ground, the Ukrainian public prosecutor's office in the Donetsk region announced on its telegram channel.

"The Russian military then shot the defenders with automatic weapons," the report continues. The incident is said to have taken place almost two weeks ago.

The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to clarify all the circumstances of the crime, the authorities announced. The shooting of prisoners of war is a serious violation of the Geneva Convention. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than two and a half years.

According to the United Nations, dozens of prisoners of war have since been killed, mostly by the Russian side.
