Ukraine and the USA want to move even closer together with a bilateral security agreement, according to Kiev. "We are already working on a concrete text," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in his evening video address on Sunday. It should be the strongest of all security agreements - even stronger than those that the country, which has been attacked by Russia, has concluded with various European states in recent months. Zelensky did not specify when the agreement between Kiev and Washington would be signed.

"We are also working on defining specific levels of support for this year and for the next ten years," Selensky outlined the planned agreement with the United States. This includes military support, financial support, political support and support for joint weapons production. "The agreement should be truly exemplary and reflect the strength of the American leadership," said Selenskyj.

The USA is already the most important supporter of Ukraine in its defensive war against Russia. Only recently, the US Senate approved a further aid package worth 57 billion euros to help the Ukrainian army, which has fallen into serious difficulties.

Ukraine sticks to peace summit

The Ukrainian leadership is sticking to the peace conference planned for June in Switzerland and is hoping for support from all over the world. The international community should encourage Russia in particular to take part in the conference, Zelensky demanded on Sunday. "The path to a just peace could then begin in June."

However, Moscow and Kiev have very different ideas about the end of the war. Russia has annexed the occupied territories in Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula, and declared them its own national territory. The Kremlin is also seeking to install a pro-Moscow government in Kiev. Ukraine, in turn, is demanding the complete withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. Kiev's peace plan also provides for Russian reparations payments and an international tribunal to punish all those responsible in Russian politics and military leadership for the war of aggression.

Klitschko reproaches Selenskyj

However, there are also disagreements at home. Kiev's mayor Vitali Klitschko, for example, laments a lack of cohesion among Ukraine's leading politicians. "Unfortunately, there is no unity between the political forces in this time of war," said Klitschko in an interview with the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers (Monday). When asked whether he had met with Selenskyj in the meantime in order to resolve the tensions between the two, Klitschko said that he had tried to do so umpteen times since the start of the war because a lot depended on the capital. "But unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to meet Zelensky personally. He probably has other things to do." Klitschko, who is said to have presidential ambitions, also accused the Ukrainian government of doing too little to combat the rampant corruption in the country.

Kiev's army chief admits military setbacks

For the defenders of Ukraine, the situation on the fronts in the east of the country is now looking dicey. Army chief Olexander Syrskyj admitted setbacks on Sunday. He reported on the Telegram platform that Russian units had pushed back the Ukrainian units, particularly west of the towns of Avdiivka and Mariinka, which had been abandoned after heavy fighting. The Ukrainian leadership has since sent more soldiers into the contested area.

The situation on the ground was "extremely dynamic", positions were repeatedly lost to the opposing side and then recaptured. "Overall, the enemy achieved some tactical successes in these areas, but was unable to gain an operational advantage," wrote Syrskyj. In the evening, the Ukrainian General Staff also reported heavy fighting in its daily situation report, in the course of which the Russian troops had received massive support from the air force and artillery.

The Russian military leadership had already reported a breach in the Ukrainian defense lines in this section on Saturday. The exact extent of the changes to the front line could not initially be assessed independently.

Military spokeswoman: Abrams tanks still on the front line

Ukrainian military officials refuted reports on Sunday that the Abrams tanks from American stocks were being withdrawn from the front due to the threat of Russian drone attacks. "It is not true that we are not using Abrams tanks or Bradley infantry fighting vehicles," said Anastasija Blischtschik, spokeswoman for the Ukrainian troops fighting near Avdiivka. Even if a war is associated with losses, the Abrams tanks have shown good results. In this front area alone, over 150 armored vehicles of the Russian army had been destroyed. The Abrams tanks are an indispensable fire support.
