The Kunsthaus Aarau is celebrating an anniversary with the "Flowers for Art" exhibition. Thousands of visitors are once again expected to marvel at 14 works of art complemented by floral creations for the tenth edition starting tomorrow, Tuesday.

Many of the more than 100 florists who have been involved in the project since 2014 will be present at the vernissage for invited guests on Monday, as announced by the Kunsthaus Aarau. An anniversary book will also be presented, showing a retrospective of 125 floral designs, all with reference to works from the Kunsthaus collection.

Floral art on a new level

What began as an experiment in 2014 has developed into a real hit. Over 18,000 visitors were counted in the record year of 2019. The exhibition led to a "win-win situation", said Kunsthaus Director Katharina Ammann in an interview with Sonntagsblick.

Showing fresh flowers together with works of art brings "increased attention" to the Kunsthaus collection, Ammann is quoted as saying. The participating florists could take their craft to a level "that they would not be able to achieve in everyday life".

Works from 1871 to 2020

Works from three centuries have been selected for this year's exhibition. From a painting by Arnold Böcklin from 1871 to contemporary works, the most recent of which was created in 2020. The majority of the participating master florists and floral designers come from German-speaking Switzerland, but Ticino and French-speaking Switzerland are also represented. One florist comes from Bratislava (Slovakia), as can be seen from the exhibition documents.

In order to manage the crowds, tickets are only available in advance during the six days of the exhibition. And the duration of each visit is limited to a time slot of 90 minutes.

The exhibition will be complemented by guided tours, workshops and talks. The Kunsthaus is also offering extended opening hours until the end of the exhibition on Sunday, March 10.
