Landslides and floods in Bosnia-Herzegovina: 14 dead

At least 14 people have died in Bosnia-Herzegovina as a result of flooding and landslides. This was reported by a spokesperson for the Herzegovina-Neretva cantonal government in Mostar, according to the Bosnian portal "klix.ba". Numerous residents are still missing.
The mountainous area around 30 kilometers north of the city of Mostar is particularly affected. After heavy rainfall, several rivers burst their banks. There was a mudslide in the village of Jablanica and many houses were affected. There, "only the minaret of the mosque" was still visible, "klix.ba" reported.
Jablanica was completely isolated for hours until disaster relief workers managed to get through. Nearby country roads are no longer passable, the water washed away the earth under the railroad tracks. In several places, disaster relief workers brought people to safety by boat.
"I can't remember a crisis like this since the war. The scale of this chaotic situation is frightening," said the cantonal spokesman, referring to the Bosnian war from 1992 to 1995. The flood forecasts for the weekend are poor, he added. "The situation remains very serious."
