The SP/JUSO, Greens/Young Greens and GLP parliamentary groups in the city of Lucerne submitted a motion on Tuesday calling for Lucerne to become the Swiss Capital of Culture 2030. They are appealing to the city council to consider a bid. The bidding process starts in December.

Lucerne's cultural life stands for a wide variety of cultural projects, highly acclaimed artists, diverse venues as well as small and large festivals. Lucerne therefore has the ideal prerequisites to become the Swiss Capital of Culture, the parliamentary groups explained their urgent postulate on Tuesday evening.

In it, they ask the Lucerne City Council to express interest in the bid for the title in 2030 and thus register a candidacy. The bidding process begins in December and runs until February 2025.

The first Swiss Capital of Culture is expected to be La Chaux-de-Fonds NE in 2027. The Council of States was the first chamber to approve the introduction of Swiss Capitals of Culture when discussing the cultural dispatch in the summer session. The National Council followed suit in September.

As with the European Capitals of Culture, the Swiss project should take place in regularly changing cities and contribute to strengthening national cohesion. If the postulants from Lucerne have their way, the participation of the core agglomeration municipalities should also be considered in an application.
