The Leopards will be awarded at the 77th Locarno Film Festival on Saturday afternoon. The only Swiss entry in the international competition is "The Sparrow in the Chimney" by the Zürcher brothers.
Swiss co-productions are also competing for the main prize. It is the Portuguese-Swiss-French debut film "Fogo do vento" by Portuguese director Marta Mateus, which was co-produced by Fabrice Aragno. The latter worked closely with Jean-Luc Godard for over 20 years.
In "Transamazonia" by German filmmaker Pia Marais, viewers follow Swiss actress Sabine Timoteo, who recently starred in Carmen Jaquier's "Foudre", and young German actress Helena Zengel, who became famous for her role in "Systemsprenger".
In addition to the Leopard for Best Film, a Leopard for Best Director and a Leopard for Best Acting Performance are also awarded in the main "International Competition" category. Since last year, this award has been gender-neutral.
17 films in the main competition
A total of 17 films are in the running for the Golden Leopard in the International Competition, including films by Ben Rivers and Hong Sangsoo, but also by lesser-known female directors such as Saule Bliuvaite from Lithuania, Marta Mateus from Portugal, Sylvie Ballyot from France and Sara Fgaier from Italy.
In the "Contemporary Filmmakers" category ("Concorso Cineasti del Presente"), which offers a platform for first and second works, the feature film "Hanami" by Ticino director with Cape Verdean roots Denise Fernandes was screened. As in the main competition, the awards in this category go to best film, best newcomer director and best acting performance.
There are another three Leopards in the "Pardi di Domani" category - a section that offers space for experiments and innovative formats. This category is in turn divided into an international competition, a national competition and one for short films.
Last but not least, the winner of the Audience Award will be announced on Saturday evening shortly before the screening of the last film of the 77th festival edition on the Piazza Grande.
