The Lucerne Festival kicked off on Friday evening with the opening concert at the KKL Lucerne. In memory of the recently deceased Wolfgang Rihm, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra dedicated an excerpt from his work "Ernster Gesang" to him.
The piece will be performed under the direction of Riccardo Chailly, as the Lucerne Festival announced at the beginning of August. Chailly was a long-time companion and friend of Rihm. The Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival Academy died at the end of July at the age of 72.
Rihm's death is a great loss, said Michael Haefliger, director of the festival. "He was an artistic and creative volcano from which the lava just poured out."
The Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO), conducted by Johanna Malangré, will kick off the opening evening. They will perform the new work "Reigen" by composer Lisa Streich. The highlight of the evening will be Gustav Mahler's Seventh Symphony, performed by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and conducted by Riccardo Chailly.
