Lucerne rejects traffic-related initiatives from the left and right

The Lucerne electorate supports the government council's road traffic policy. On Sunday, they rejected both the proposals to strengthen motorized road traffic and to make local thoroughfares more compatible with residential areas.
The Green Party's "Attractive centers" referendum, which called for cantonal and municipal roads in town centers to be designed in a more settlement-friendly way, was rejected with 72.8 percent of votes against (64,218 to 24,018 votes). The main argument against the proposal was that it violated the autonomy of the municipalities.
With 80.4 percent of votes against (70,241 to 17,151 votes), voters also rejected the Young SVP's "Anti-Congestion Initiative". The popular initiative demanded that the capacity of the cantonal road network for motorized private transport should not be reduced.
A counter-proposal to the "anti-congestion initiative" was also rejected, with 51.4 percent of votes against (43,474 to 41,161 votes). The counter-proposal was penned by the Cantonal Council's preliminary advisory committee.
In contrast to the initiative, the counter-proposal was not limited to car traffic, but also included bicycle, bus and pedestrian traffic. The canton would therefore have had to ensure an efficient road network and compensate for any reduction in capacity on the surrounding road network.
The canton of Lucerne can expand its second-largest school, the one in Sursee. The voters approved a special loan of CHF 59.7 million with 79.7 percent of votes in favor (70,225 to 17,841 votes). With the approved expansion, Sursee will one day be able to teach 61 classes with 1,200 pupils.
