The maintenance division of Swiss parent company Lufthansa is having a plant built in Portugal. Engine parts and aircraft components are to be repaired at the site south of Porto.
More than 700 jobs are to be created, according to Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. The plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Lufthansa Technik justified its decision in favor of Portugal with the country's position in the European Union, political stability and infrastructure. The announcement does not reveal exactly how much money the company is investing in the plant.
The Lufthansa Group is also interested in taking over the state-owned airline TAP. The award of the contract for the technology site could have a positive effect on this, it is hoped in Frankfurt.
Lufthansa Technik describes itself as the world's leading provider of maintenance, repair and overhaul services for civil, commercially operated aircraft. The company employs more than 24,000 people.
