Major events place additional demands on the city of Berne’s winter services

The main roads in the city of Bern have been cleared of snow. Since Friday lunchtime, the winter service has been concentrating on clearing snow in the districts and in the old town. Two major events are taking place in the city center: the municipal elections and the Zibelemärit.
The area around the town hall must be completely cleared of snow for the elections on Sunday, as the Directorate for Civil Engineering, Transport and Urban Greenery announced on Friday. The town hall also serves as a media center. Only in snow-free areas can the broadcasting vehicles be parked unhindered near the town hall and the logistics work.
On Monday, the big "Zibelemärit" festival will take place. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected in the city center.
The preparatory work for setting up the infrastructure and the more than 400 market stalls is currently in full swing. The old town streets and squares have to be completely cleared of snow. This means that snowdrifts from pushing the snow away also have to be removed. This work requires additional human and mechanical resources.
The main traffic and public transport routes were driven along again on Friday morning in order to remove the layer of ice as best as possible and to salt the road again, as the city also reported.
It's not just public transport that is affected by the heavy snowfall, there may also be restrictions on refuse collection. This is despite the fact that the refuse collection vehicles are equipped with snow chains, as the city writes.
