Maria Wegelin, President of the SVP Winterthur and National Council candidate, has stepped down from her position following allegations of her collaboration with two activists from the far-right "Junge Tat" group. The party will discuss the matter at an extraordinary general assembly at the end of October. In agreement with the party leadership, Wegelin has decided to step down from her position as party president until the extraordinary assembly. The party does not tolerate any form of extremism, including right-wing extremism. Last week, the "Sonntagsblick" reported that Wegelin had hired two activists from the far-right "Junge Tat" group to support her election campaign on social media. Both of them have criminal records. This week, it was revealed that the leader of the "Junge Tat" is a member of the Young SVP in the canton of Thurgau. Wegelin stated that she had never heard of the group at the time of the contract and that the two young men had seemed sympathetic to her, as they shared similar views on the coronavirus and the federal measures. The Houseowners Association of Winterthur (HEV) has withdrawn its support for Wegelin in the National Council elections. They called on her to distance herself from the "Junge Tat" group, which she did not do within the given deadline.
