The Max Ophüls Preis (MOP) film festival for young German-language films began on Monday evening in Saarbrücken. The 45th edition of the MOP opened with the tragicomedy "Rickerl - Musik is höchstens a Hobby" by Austrian director Adrian Goiginger. Switzerland is represented with five films.
Schweiuz is competing in the documentary film category with "The Driven Ones" by Piet Baumgartner. The director followed several students on the Strategy and International Management Master's program at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) over a period of seven years and shows their motivation: success.
"Electric Fields" by Lisa Gertsch is nominated in the feature film category. The program also includes three Swiss short films: "And The Wind Weeps" by Aulona Selmani, "God's Anus" by Jan-David Bolt and "Syncope" by Linus von Stumberg.
During the festival week, which runs until January 28, German actresses Lena Urzendowsk and Julia Jentsch as well as their colleague Mark Waschke are expected to present their films. The guest of honor at this year's MOP is director Christian Schwochow ("The Crown", 2019, 2022, 2023 or "Je suis Karl", 2021). He will be coming to Saarbrücken for tribute screenings and an exchange with talents.
The Max Ophüls Prize festival in Saarbrücken stands for the discovery of young talent from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Until Sunday, 131 films will be shown in 226 screenings. The filmmakers can once again look forward to 18 prizes totaling 118,500 euros, which will be awarded at a closing ceremony on Saturday. 58 films are taking part in the competitions in four categories: feature film, documentary, medium-length film and short film.
