A vehicle damaged a hydrant in Oberuzwil SG on Friday evening. As a result, a large amount of water leaked out and two villages in the municipality were without water for several hours. The damage to property is estimated at one million francs.

The cause of the accident is still unknown, the St. Gallen cantonal police announced on Saturday. At around 8.45 p.m., the Oberuzwil water cooperative received an alarm about a loss of water pressure. At around 9.15 p.m., a member of the Uzwil region fire department who happened to be driving past noticed that a cellar room on Städeli Street was full of water.

Members of the Uzwil region fire department were able to identify the damaged hydrant as the cause of the loss of water pressure. According to the police, the hydrant had probably been hit by an unknown vehicle, which caused the water to escape. The hydrant was hardly damaged on the outside.

As the water also penetrated the server room of an electrical engineering company, the damage to property is estimated at one million francs. Due to the loss of pressure, the villages of Bichwil and Riggenschwil were also without water for several hours.
