In the future, the mobile communications network should continue to function even during power outages. According to the Federal Council's proposal, the three providers in Switzerland must therefore install emergency power supplies at central locations.
The Federal Council on Wednesday sent a corresponding amendment to the Telecommunications Ordinance for consultation. The network must remain operational to enable emergency call services, the public telephone service and access to the Internet, it writes in a statement.
The three providers active in Switzerland must therefore install an emergency power supply at central sites and at the transmitters. This means they must guarantee mobile communications in the event of power failures lasting up to 72 hours or so-called power failure cycles lasting 14 consecutive days.
The providers now have five years to implement the measures relating to emergency call services - and three more for access to the public telephone service and the Internet. They must bear the costs themselves, as the Federal Council writes. The consultation period runs until February 16, 2024.
