Mohamed Almusibli becomes new director of Kunsthalle Basel

Swiss curator Mohamed Almusibli is to become the new director of Kunsthalle Basel. On March 1, 2024, he will succeed Elena Filipovic, who was elected as the new director of the Kunstmuseum Basel, as announced by the Basler Kunstverein on Monday.
Born in Geneva in 1990, Mohamed Almusibli is co-founder and director of the independently run art space "Cherish" in Geneva and consultant for the Hartwig Art Foundation in Amsterdam.
Almusibli holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Haute Ecole d'Arts et Design in Geneva, a Bachelor of Arts and Media from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and a Bachelor in Art History and Arabic from the University of Geneva.
90 applications from all over the world
The job advertisement attracted more than 90 applications from all over the world, according to the press release. Eleven people were invited to an interview. According to the press release, the selection committee, chaired by Kunstverein President Martin Hatebur, was impressed by Almusibli's background and his ideas for the program.
The chosen candidate's close ties to contemporary artists, innovative approach to the use of new technologies, knowledge of the local art scene and personality are emphasized.
