The new Covid-variant BA.2.86 has the potential to cause an infection wave, according to the Chief Physician of Infectiology at the Kantonsspital Winterthur. Since mid-August, there have been an average of four to six patients hospitalized due to or with Covid, usually elderly people with comorbidities such as heart rhythm disorders or heart failure. However, few people are now dying from a Covid infection. People over 65 and younger people with chronic pre-existing conditions should get tested, according to the former Vice President of the Covid-19 Task Force. The new variant is not spreading particularly quickly, and data so far does not suggest that it leads to severe courses. Risk groups and people with Long Covid are advised to get a booster shot for risk prevention. Karrer does not expect 75% of the population to be infected within a short time, as was the case in winter 2022, but believes that Covid still has the potential to cause a serious wave, with 20-30% of the population becoming infected. This will be felt in hospitals, nursing homes and GP practices. Karrer would not be surprised if it started in November or December.
