More than one in 20 people in Switzerland gave up meat in 2024. The trend towards more vegetarian and vegan diets is thus continuing, the Swissveg association announced on Thursday.

The number of people who do not consume meat has increased significantly over the last five years. According to Swissveg, 3.8% of the population were vegetarian or vegan in 2019, 4.9% in 2023 and 5.3% in 2024. 0.7% of them were vegan and did not consume any products of animal origin at all.

In 2024, Swissveg counted a total of 308,000 vegetarians in Switzerland, with 50,000 following a vegan diet. The difference in dietary habits between women and men was once again evident: in 2024, 6.3% of women lived without meat, compared to 2.9% of men. 0.9 percent of women described themselves as vegans, while 0.5 percent of men considered themselves vegans.

The figures are based on the annual, representative Mach consumer study. This is based on over 14-year-olds who speak German, French or Italian. 30,000 people took part in the telephone survey.
