On Monday, the National Council followed up on the dispute about 30 km/h speed limits as a means of reducing noise along major traffic routes. Just a few days after the Council of States spoke out in favor of fewer 30 km/h sections on such roads, it is now also calling for this.

On Monday afternoon, the Grand Chamber approved a motion by Thomas Hurter, a member of the Schaffhausen SVP National Council, to revise the Environmental Protection Act. He wants to place a sentence in the Environmental Protection Act that reads: "On traffic-oriented roads, the reduction of the general speed limit cannot be demanded."

The background to this demand is that more and more cities are reducing the maximum speed limit from 50 to 30 km/h on important parts of their road network in order to reduce noise.

Last Wednesday, the Council of States approved a motion by National Councillor Peter Schilliger (FDP/LU) calling on the Federal Council to amend the Road Traffic Act in line with Hutter's proposal. The National Council had already approved it in September.
