In Switzerland, the use-by or expiration date on food could be replaced by a best-before date. On Wednesday, the National Council supported a motion by Martina Munz (SP/SH) to reduce food waste. The Council of States must now decide on this.

Food is often thrown away because it is past its best-before date, argued Munz. Yet they are still perfectly edible. The Federal Food Safety Office (FSVO) is called upon to implement the two guidelines drawn up in 2021 to prevent food loss.

The Federal Council requested that the motion be rejected. Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider said that the Federal Council had adopted its action plan against food waste in spring 2022. This aims to halve food waste by 2030.
