National Council orders report on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

The National Council wants answers from the Federal Council on the involvement of Swiss diplomacy in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. On Tuesday, it adopted a corresponding postulate without discussion.
In particular, the national government should examine whether and how Switzerland can advocate for security guarantees for the Armenians remaining in the region. The report should also address measures for the release of Armenian prisoners of war. It will also discuss what Switzerland can do for the approximately 100,000 people who fled to Armenia after Azerbaijan conquered the region.
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Council (FAC-N) drafted the postulate following a petition. The Federal Council agreed with the mandate.
Nagorno-Karabakh has been disputed between the ex-Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia for decades. In the 1990s, the region, which lies on Azerbaijani territory but was inhabited by a majority of Armenians at the time, broke away from Baku in a bloody civil war with the help of Yerevan.
In 2020, Azerbaijan recaptured large parts of Nagorno-Karabakh, and in September 2023, the Azerbaijani army launched another offensive to force the government of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Artsakh, which was proclaimed by Armenians, to surrender. Since then, Azerbaijan has controlled the entire region. Almost the entire ethnic Armenian population fled as a result.
