The National Council has begun its first session of the new legislative period, the 52nd in the history of the federal state. Gerhard Pfister, a centrist member of the National Council from Zug, opened the session in his capacity as President of the Old Parliament.

The first item on the agenda of this constituent session of the National Council was a speech by the 61-year-old from Zug, who has been a member of the large chamber of the Swiss parliament without interruption since 2003.

Pfister's speech was followed by an address from the youngest member of the Council to be elected for the first time, Bernese SVP National Councillor Katja Riem. The National Council was then to be constituted at the request of its provisional office. According to parliamentary documents, the Council is constituted when the election has been declared valid for the majority of its members.

After the swearing-in of the National Council members, the election of the Council presidency was on the agenda. Eric Nussbaumer (SP/BL), the current Vice-President, was nominated. A term of office lasts four years.
