The new exhibition "Consumer Worlds" at the National Museum Zurich shows how much shopping and consumption have changed over the last 170 years. The development is illustrated using photographs and graphic products.

The first part of the exhibition, which opens on Friday, focuses on places of sale, according to a press release from the National Museum. While markets and the street and hawker trade were still dominant in the mid-19th century, stores, wholesalers, department stores, shopping centers and finally online stores were added over time.

The second part of the exhibition focuses on moments of consumption, again documented in photography and graphics. Eating, drinking, driving, traveling, television and fashion.

A slide show with vacation photos of the couple Yvonne and Jakob Hohl-Galbiati illustrates the increasing prosperity from the 1950s onwards. Like many other Swiss people, the tour guide and the insurance inspector could afford to take regular vacations abroad.

The numerous pictures and objects from the collections of the Swiss National Museum provide an insight into the development and the economic, social and cultural significance of everyday consumerism.
