The SVP initiative "No 10 million Switzerland! (Sustainability Initiative)" has been formally approved. Its verification revealed that 114,430 of the 114,805 signatures submitted are valid, as the Federal Chancellery announced on Friday.
A total of 100,000 signatures are required for the initiative to be passed. The SVP wants to reiterate its mass immigration initiative, which was approved by the people and cantons in February 2014, with this new attempt to implement the issue.
The party's accusation is that parliament and the national government are not implementing them. In 2020, however, its Limitation Initiative had no chance at the ballot box. This demanded the termination of the free movement of persons with the EU.
The sustainability initiative is once again targeting the free movement of persons. According to the text of the initiative, a new article on "sustainable population development" is to be added to the Federal Constitution. According to this, the permanent resident population should not exceed ten million people before 2050.
If 9.5 million people live in the country before 2050, the Federal Council and Parliament would have to take measures. For example, temporarily admitted persons would no longer be able to obtain a permanent residence permit or be naturalized. Family reunification would also be restricted.
Switzerland would have to renegotiate international agreements that lead to population growth with regard to exemption or safeguard clauses. If all this is not enough to comply with the limit, the SVP believes that Switzerland would have to terminate the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU as an emergency measure.
