In a second rescue operation on Monday, the World Health Organization (WHO) brought 18 seriously ill patients out of the embattled Nasser Hospital in Chan Junis in the Gaza Strip.

This was reported by a spokesperson in Geneva on Tuesday. 14 had already been taken to other hospitals on Sunday. Among them were two children.

There is neither electricity nor running water in the hospital, as the spokesperson further reported. Patients are lying in the corridors in the dark. The remaining 15 members of staff are trying to keep the remaining 130 or so patients alive. They had been provided with water and food during the risky visit. Roads and houses around the hospital had been destroyed, the spokesman said. The WHO is very concerned about the well-being of the remaining patients and staff.

Israeli special forces entered the hospital. According to the army, the operation was based on intelligence information that the Islamist Hamas was operating from the hospital. Around 100 people were arrested, who the army classifies as suspected terrorists. According to the Hamas health authority, many of those arrested are members of the medical staff. The information could not initially be independently verified.
