Nicolas Walder, National Councillor for the Greens in Geneva, has announced that he will be available to his party as co-president following the announced resignation of party president Balthasar Glättli. He could imagine taking over the party presidency with his party colleague from Basel, Sibel Arslan.
He will be available if his candidacy is also in line with the party's strategy, Walder wrote on Tuesday evening at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, confirming a report by Swiss Radio and Television's (SRF) "Tagesschau". The strategy of how the party should be presided over after Glättli's resignation has yet to be discussed.
Acting Green Party President Glättli announced his resignation on Tuesday. He cited his party's electoral defeat in the national elections this fall as the reason for his decision. The Greens lost 3.4 percentage points of voters.
Co-Presidency conceivable
There are other "potentially interested persons" for Glättli's successor, Walder wrote. However, as the candidacies are not yet open, no one has yet confirmed their interest. Glättli said on Tuesday that he could well imagine a leadership duo. The party leadership should become younger and more female.
Walder could imagine taking on a possible co-chairmanship with Sibel Arslan. The two already work together in the National Council's Legal Affairs Committee and Foreign Affairs Committee. "Sibel Arslan is a very pleasant and, above all, very competent person," says Walder. The decision on the new party leadership will be made by the Green Party delegates at their meeting on April 6, 2024.
