In the municipalities on the left bank of Lake Geneva affected by a pipe burst, the water is still not drinkable. The first bacteriological analyses have so far been classified as "compliant". However, the water is still classified as undrinkable as a precautionary measure, the Geneva public utility company (SIG) announced on Monday.
In addition to the nine municipalities already named on Sunday, eleven streets in the districts of Eaux-Vives, Chêne-Bourg and Chêne-Bougeries in the city of Geneva were also partially affected, it added. The results of further analyses will be announced on Tuesday. Until then, the water in the affected towns and districts must be boiled before consumption.
In terms of health, no increase in the number of sick people was observed. The reports were classified as "reassuring" 36 hours after the start of the infection, both by the hospitals and by the emergency number 144.
Due to a broken drinking water pipe, the tap water of 40,000 inhabitants in nine Geneva municipalities in the Rive Gauche is undrinkable, according to the Geneva authorities. Thônex, Choulex, Corsier, Vandoeuvres, Collonge-Bellerive, Hermance, Anières, Puplinge and Cologny are affected.
The water was declared undrinkable last Sunday morning after a pipe on Quai Gustave Ador burst during the night. This led to a vacuum in the water network, which could have caused the water to be contaminated by bacteria from the air, according to the Geneva public utility company.
