The Swiss Nuclear Forum welcomes the Federal Council's decision on the construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs). The lifting of the ban on new construction in Switzerland would mark an important step towards a secure and climate-friendly power supply, it argues.
At the same time, the Nuclear Forum emphasizes in a press release that this step alone is not enough. Simplification of the approval process and legal certainty during the project planning and construction phase are also necessary in order to make new construction projects in Switzerland possible again.
Hans-Ulrich Bigler, President of the Swiss Nuclear Forum and former Bernese FDP National Councillor, was quoted in a press release as saying that the lifting of the ban on new construction was long overdue and a step towards greater technological openness. It would give Switzerland more room for maneuver in terms of security of supply and climate protection.
However, this step alone is not enough. At the same time, the licensing regime for nuclear power plants must be simplified, according to Bigler.
