A skier has been killed by an avalanche off-piste in Valais. It broke loose in Val Ferret and initially buried the man on Sunday. Although he was able to free himself from the masses of snow, he later succumbed to his injuries in hospital, according to the police.

The storm and the heavy snowfall at the weekend led to avalanches, which is why great caution is required over the next few days, the Valais cantonal police warned in a statement on Sunday evening.

On Sunday, an avalanche hit the road at the two gallery entrances in the village of Zenschmieden in Eisten. No one was injured.

Due to the heavy snowfall, the Saas Valley is closed to all traffic from Stalden onwards, as the Valais authorities announced on Sunday, as is the Simplon-Dorf-Gondo route. An avalanche also fell between Täsch and Zermatt on Sunday afternoon and buried part of the road, which is closed until further notice.
