People with disabilities were more at risk of poverty than the rest of the population in 2021. Those affected also had to make use of external financial support more frequently, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday.
Although almost three quarters of people with disabilities were in employment, they had a significantly lower income. Two years ago, 16 percent of people with a disability lived in a household with a disposable income below 60 percent of the Swiss median income. The proportion in the rest of the population was ten percent.
According to the FSO, people with disabilities received more external financial support than other people. They claimed more supplementary benefits and social assistance. In addition, the risk of poverty increases with the degree of disability. People with severe everyday limitations are more at risk of poverty than people without disabilities.
Over 90 percent of people without physical disabilities would classify their state of health as good, wrote the FSO. For people with disabilities, the figure was just under half. 17 percent of them described their state of health as poor or very poor. In four percent of cases, people with disabilities also stated that they had to forego necessary medical treatment.
