The Swiss Sponsorship for Mountain Communities supports 38 projects with over CHF 2.6 million. The projects supported are located in the cantons of Graubünden, Valais, Ticino, Bern, Glarus, Uri, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Jura.
As the organization announced on Friday, it can look back on a good year in 2023. Despite the unpleasant environment, it continued to experience strong solidarity from its patrons, including cantons, cities, municipalities, foundations, institutions and private individuals.
According to the press release, the donations and legacies will be used for infrastructure (e.g. water and sewage systems, power supplies), measures to maintain and preserve the Alps (e.g. alpine buildings, melioration), protective measures against natural hazards, clean-up and reconstruction work after natural disasters and training.
The organization was thus able to transfer several contributions for the education of young mountain people from the school fund.
Support thanks to severe weather fund
The storm fund is also used time and again. The organization transferred a total of CHF 350,000 to the municipality of Wiler VS in the Lötschental valley to repair the damage caused by a storm on 24 August 2023. Of this, CHF 35,000 came from the storm fund.
The water supply also regularly poses major financial challenges for mountain communities. This is where the Swiss sponsorship for mountain communities can often provide relief.
