Switzerland should not join the UN migration pact adopted in 2018. After the Council of States, the National Council has also spoken out in favor of this.
Following the National Council's "no" vote, the Federal Assembly simply takes note of the pact's guiding principles in accordance with the adopted federal decree. The Councillors are also in favor of supporting international cooperation on migration. However, the Federal Assembly "supports" Switzerland not agreeing to the pact.
The state government actually wanted to sign the pact back in 2018, but decided against it because parliament demanded a say.
The UN migration pact sets out measures to regulate migration across borders. Among other things, it deals with aid in migrants' countries of origin, their rights, but also with securing borders and combating smuggling gangs.
